Salvages:Reclaimable building material

history-and-components-of-green-buildingApart from the environmental concerns’, recycled building materials are often less expensive than their brand new counterparts. We have realized that  there’s a healthy demand for salvaged building material.

Contractors and developers enjoy lower costs of  materials, less time is spent hauling material out of sites & yes, even environmental authorities will hate you a little less. We compiled a list of some itet can be reused albeit non-structurally in recon or renovation work.

1. Reclaimed Wood

Found in abundance in most of the older homes in the roofs, stair panels, ceilings, hand rails, window seals, flooring and countertops. Wood can be milled and processed into stunning new products.

2. Steel & Iron

Steel & iron are common construction materials used in project. You find them on roofing sheets (mabati) , galvanized pipes, columns, beams, trusses, scaffolds and many others.  In for the simple reason that it doesn’t lose structural strength after being recycled. Recycled steel has been used in new buildings, bridges, cars, and more. Recycled steel is less expensive to produce than virgin steel. Plus, recycling steel causes far fewer carbon emissions than extracting new steel

3.  Gypsum

Sandwich gypsum between two sheets of paper and you have drywall. Its high recycling value is due to drywall’s varied recycling potentials: Gypsum scraps can be used to patch walls, to form concrete, or to create new drywall. The gypsum in drywall is beloved by gardeners, who use it to nourish plants. Finally, the paper in drywall can be recycled as well. Salvaging drywall is an Earth-friendly operation, not only because it reduces landfill volumes, but also because drywall in landfills can leak sulfate into nearby watersheds.

4. Glass and Windows

Like steel, glass can be repeatedly recycled with no loss of quality. Environmentally conscious consumers and businesses are drawn to glass because it’s inherently green—for every ton of glass that’s recycled rather than extracted, a ton of natural resources are saved. Windows salvaged from demolition sites can be recycled for any number of applications, from sandblasting to paving parking lots.

Rubber|Polypropylene flooring KENYA

gym-1040992_960_720

Although rubber flooring is widely used in commercial settings such as cafeterias, hospitals and gym weight rooms, it’s gaining traction as a viable flooring for homes, too.

One big reason is style — rubber flooring is available in a huge array of colors and textures that make it an appealing designer’s choice. A skilled installer can even cut rubber into patterns and mosaics that make eye-catching, one-of-a-kind floors.

Plus, it’s sound-absorbent, impervious to moisture and it’s cushiony comfortable underfoot. It comes in sheets for nearly seamless installations and DIY-friendly tiles that fit together with interlocking edges. Rubber flooring can be glued down, but many products are so heavy that glue is unnecessary — the flooring simply lays flat and stays put on its own.

The choice of sports flooring depends on a number of factors:

1. Area shape

Simply, this is the design of the space where the gym will occupy.

Many customers prefer an interlocking rubber flooring tile; thereby avoiding the need to glue or adhere the rubber tiles to the ground.  Interlocking rubber floors are loose laid on the concrete; and do not require glue or adhesives.

Other customers prefer rolled rubber flooring; due to the seamless appearance and easy cleaning methods.  Rolled rubber flooring is very popular in commercial gyms, weight rooms, locker rooms and more.  Rolled rubber can also be a great choice for your home basement gym.

2. Use of space

Different mat thicknesses demand different use. Aerobics and low impact use generally can do with ≤4mm thick while high impact sports and heavy weight areas demand extra padding.

Gym flooring must be Durable

3. Durability and maintenance

Gym and sports flooring require regular cleaning. This means the rubber should be able to withstand wear and tear and perform consistently well with regular cleaning. Contact us today to request a quote or to learn more about stall mats here.

Note : There is a  difference between rubber and polypropylene material. The finishes, appearance and installation of the material varies. The latter can also  be installed in basketball courts, tennis, netball and playgrounds etc.

Stroika’s 2015 Forecast on Lighting Trends

1. Go Solar

Apart from being green products, the new breed of solar lighting solutions are guaranteed to ensure savings on electricity bills. We see this in application with the solar lanterns with new features including mobile phone charging capabilities, garden lights, indoor lighting ( reliant on solar panels) and even security lighting like our outdoor wall lights with motion sensorssolar-motion-lighting_STRKLGHT_032

2. Think Smart

Your mobile phone should be able to control your lighting. If it can’t , you need an upgrade. Your lighting system should be so intuitive that they know when you have left a room or need to get that coat from the back of your closet. We have great installers and fantastic new smart lighting that can be customized for your office, home, car or garden. Contact us here

3. Lead with LED

LED lighting simulate natural daylight, is less harmful to the environment and saves energy compared to incandescent light bulbs. Commercial spaces such offices are now adopting LED panels in favour of the commonplace fluorescent tubes.

New market entrants like the LED strips work well for staircases, corridors, counters and any other suitable surfaces. We see an uptake in these for 2015.

4. Pendant, chandeliers and wall mounted lighting

Previously a reserve of the lounge areas in hotels and homes, these 3 types of lighting are streaming into other common areas including showers, kitchens, bar areas, stairwells and corridors. The designs for these lighting types are ever increasing and clients are constantly in search of affordable but high quality lighting.

The statement chandelier pieces are remarkably in demand for commercial projects and pendant lighting being a star performer in residential housing.

5. Automotive LED lighting

Car lighting for the headlights, interior and body are all going LED. We have had success with our rim stickers which mimic LED.  LED strips, especially for the interior of cars, are a potentially healthy niche market. We see an upsurge in LED in other numerous applications.

Comparing Bamboo with Laminate flooring

Bamboo flooring is made from glued strips of bamboo (a grass) while laminate flooring is made from fusing plastic (synthetic) to simulate wooden flooring. This article consolidates the differences between these types of flooring.

1. Price

Laminate Flooring is much cheaper when considering  initial cost. Bamboo flooring is relativley more expensive but increases the value of the house. This is especially useful for property developers who are looking to resell or get tenants.

2. Durability

Bamboo is hard, and its production results in a product that is extremely difficult to puncture or dent. It is, however, not very resistant to being scratched. For that reason, it is suggested that furniture not be dragged across it, and in areas (such as under a dining table) where chairs would be pulled across the floor, an area rug should be used. It is also easily faded by strong sunlight, so curtains or other covers over windows are recommended to filter the light.

Laminate flooring is resistant to scratches, and is often used in high traffic areas. It is also fade resistant. Although it is difficult to puncture or dent, it is not as hard as bamboo, meaning that high heeled shoes, for example, are more of a danger to laminate floors than to bamboo, but they are not recommended for either.

If badly damaged, bamboo can be repaired because it is a solid material. If the top appliquéd portion of a laminate floor is damaged, it cannot be repaired, but must be removed.

3. Chemical composition

Bamboo Flooring is mainly made up of glued bamboo planks, while the support material of Laminate Flooring consists of glued wooden fiber. The content of formaldehyde in laminate flooring(LF) is  higher than that in bamboo and is emitted  throughout the life of the floor.  However, as long as  it meets the standard of formaldehyde release, Laminate flooring is considered safe.

4. Appearance

Colors available in Laminate flooring include   cherry, teak, walnut , oak and ceramic tile (can be more).

Bamboo flooring is available in natural color (Looks just like wood) solid teak, carbonized color, cherry, coffee brown and several other colors.

 5. Noise
Bamboo is generally less noisy. On the other hand, laminate flooring produces more noise in general due to the fact that they are ‘floated’.  Proper underlays may reduce the noise.

6. Installation

Laminate floors are floating floors and install over flooring underlay. It’s called a “floating floor” because the floor itself isn’t attached to the subfloor. Only the planks are attached to each other using a click locking mechanism. When made well, these floors are very easy to install and it’s why they are the choice for many do-it-yourself flooring projects.

Bamboo floors can also be ‘floated’. This variety are referred to as the ‘click’ bamboo floors . These are called click engineered HDF core bamboo floors and they’re becoming very popular as an alternative to laminate floors. They install exactly the same way as laminate flooring and some even have an attached underlay.
